She has suffered from the 'little sister' syndrome for as long as she remembers, always being the one in second row where her sister, just one year her elder takes charge. Haley can do everything just a notch better, can't she? Wrong. But who cares, really? Haley's the one people see, her sister is the one doing her groundwork. But not for much longer! Up until the time she was thirteen, Francesca has been almost content and lazy in the shadow of Haley, but then she started to slowly go her own way. She knew that she might never be the leader person Haley was, but that her own hopes and dreams were something she didn't have to put back in service of her. Once that resolution was set, Fanny became more fierce, more independent and maybe just a tad more quirky, standing true to the interest she has. Those are aside from Charms all kinds of languages, the more seldom and peculiar the better. She also became more aware of her surroundings, this falling in line with the complete turn for the worse the wizarding world took. She developed a strong sense of right and wrong and what the Death Eaters did and what Hogwarts has become is certainly all kinds of wrong. Therefore she is an ardent member of Dumbledore's Army. Speaking of ardent, there is certainly something fiery about Fanny, when she only allows herself. Fire is her element through and through, she has a knack for fire charms and if she is convinced of something she 'burns' for that cause. Due to that and due to the joking crippling of her nickname Fanny to 'Feeney', she has been dubbed 'Phoenix' by some of her friends. Fanny's fierce nature can get her in trouble though, especially now as she tries to emanzipate herself from her sister. It can happen that she disobeys Haley on purpose, because she won't be swayed off some path – yes, she is stubborn! - and she is firmly convinced that the DA should do more than secretly train fighting Dark Arts. Her dream would be a revolution started by Hogwarts and spreading throughout the land, until the Death Eaters are simply swept off the face of the earth and the muggles and muggleborns finally left in peace. She would give her life for that cause given half her chance, and it often takes all of Haley's big sister authority to keep Fanny in line. HISTORY Francesca Aideen Dakota was born on the Beltaine night of 1987, the 30th April, a night of fire and witchcraft it was said. Thus the day of her birth should prove prophetic for some of her future character traits. She was the second child of Helena and Jeremy Dakota and also their second daughter. When they were little Haley and Francesca were often mistaken for twins, because there was only a difference of a fraction over a year between them and they both sported flaming red hair. But it was always Haley who would take the lead and Fanny the one who simply followed. It was easier that way as she had been considered 'slower' than her bright and responsible sister and receiving orders was always less of trouble than trying to do things yourself. Their parents were often away, Jeremy being a tax accountant and Helena working for the Daily Prophet, so the care of Francesca was entrusted on the older sister early on. Fanny grew up in both the muggle and the wizarding world in equal terms, their father and the little what was left of his family keeping the secret of Helena's 'background' faithfully. Her childhood was fairly uneventful, though her world nearly crashed when Haley was sent to Hogwarts and Fanny was forced to stay behind until the next year. She lived for every syllable of her sister's letters and practically hanging on her every word as she returned for the Christmas Holidays. Hogwarts seemed to be such a wonderful place, one she couldn't wait to explore for herself. She especially wanted to meet Dumbledore, the man both her mother and her sister spoke of with a sense of awe. How horrible it was then for her to learn that when Haley returned at the beginning of summer, Dumbledore was said to have been killed. Fanny felt utterly betrayed, cheated off one of her greatest dreams, because she knew that without Dumbledore Hogwarts would never be the same again. Their parents even considered not sending their girls back as the school was overtaken by Death Eaters, but they came off it after Fanny threw a major tantrum, the worst anyone had ever experienced with her. She would not be denied Hogwarts! It was bad enough she now would never meet Dumbledore, but she WOULD attend Hogwarts, don the Sorting Hat and feast in the Great Hall. So the Dakota siblings returned and Fanny tried to make the best of the situation, though a dire one it was. At least one of her dreams was fulfilled as she was sorted into Gryffindor, though in hindsight she sometimes thought that a different house might have been better. For there Haley and her fell back into their same old pattern: The older in the lead, the younger reduced to being 'Haley's sister'. They were both too young to really participate in any resistance, though they knew through their cousin Audrey's family that a resistance group called Dumbledore's Army resisted, fighting against the innumerous repressions. If Fanny had thought her year couldn't get any worse, then she certainly hadn't expected Voldemort's and Harry Potter's forces to clash on the school grounds. The Battle of Hogwarts was a horrible chaos of fighting wizards, running students, fire and blood. Many died, and Fanny herself barely escaped with her life as a hex tore a huge chip out of a wall near year, half burying her under a pile of rubble. They hoped until the very end that the forces of the Order might be victorious, but their hopes were thwarted. A retreat was sounded and Hogwarts was left under Death Eater rule. Things changed after that, changed in an even horribler way. Muggleborns were expelled and hunted down, even half bloods eyed with wariness and slight contempt. Bullying, torture and fear were a daily occurrence. But even within those circumstances, resistance could never be fully quenched. In secret, the DA grew strong again, soon led by none other than Haley Dakota and her best friend Charlie. In the beginning, Fanny was as always, merely a tagalong, but she soon began to prove her worth, having found her vocation in Charms and Duelling. Only in those secret training meetings and the open trainings of the Duelling Club could she finally find an outlet for her pent-up frustration with the status quo. She began to experiment even as she entered her fifth year, merging hexes and curses with elements of charms to make them more effective, showing a great deal of creativity. Time passed and Voldemort's hold grew stronger and stronger. Soon, Fanny's mother resigned from her post at the Daily Prophet, as she feared a position so exposed and under close surveillance by the Death Eaters might endanger her muggle husband. The older and more experienced Fanny became, the less could she accept that – in her eyes – the Order did merely bide its time, resigning to damage control. She also believed that if the majority of the Hogwarts students only stood together – and an oppressed majority they were! - they would be able to drive the Death Eater force off the school grounds. She craved a revolution, just like those she had read about, both in the muggle and in the wizarding world. However, Haley would not have it, rather keeping the DA under the radar and chiding Fanny for being more reckless than might be healthy for them all. How long she will continue to listen, remains to be seen. It is certain, however, that Hogwarts will see more of Fanny 'Phoenix' Dakota in the mere future, she is bursting at the seam to prove herself. |
