The moon glistened above the pool of blackness with no reflection in sight, the light was easily engulfed by the darkness. The air was frigid and somewhat stiff as a lone figure stood lakeside observing the still night. The dark forest stood on one edge of the lake juxtaposed by the white tomb on the other - which happened to be closest to Hogwarts. The omnipotent presence of the large white stone rectangle appeared ghostly in the dim light that the moon was casting. The figure stared wearily in the direction of the tomb as if in silent contemplation. The time was currently closer to midnight and Severus had wrapped up his paperwork for the night after which he had opted to take a walk to clear his mind. The grounds were not exactly safe to walk at this time of night with the dementors on strike from Azkaban and roaming the grounds freely. Although usually cautious, Severus was not to be bothered by these petty issues because he was in a strong position currently. He had little to worry about in terms of problems that he could not tackle for he was a capable wizard and now more than ever he was proving it to world. Despite his true allegiances he could not help but be captivated by the power that he now held in his hands for a moment, however fleeting he always felt guilty for it. And that guilt was heavy, it dripped down into his bones. It was easy to remind himself why he was still standing here currently, in fact it was possibly one of the only reasons why he wasn't dead or even in Azkaban. It was her and what her memory had driven him to do so many years before. Severus felt his fingers tighten around his wand in his pocket as a visible pain shot through his chest. His breathing became labored for a few seconds as he tried to work the memories away - to set them adrift down a large stream where they would find solace and where they would no longer be near to incriminate him.
Keeping his mind clear had been something of a challenge recently, as things were beginning to wind down Severus had a feeling this was not going to get any easier. He had always been a master at keeping his composure throughout the day, even during the most challenging of times, but recently he was feeling as if he were being worn thin. The Death Eaters were causing trouble around the clock at Hogwarts and the students were no better, it was all out war after all. The corridors and the common rooms had been quiet as of late though, and that had struck Severus as peculiar but refreshing. He was easily convinced that it wouldn't last long though, and nearly certain that one or the other party were busy plotting their next move. His main concern was that a student would be permenantly injured or suffer an untimely death, either incident would not reflect well on him - that was to say if he made it out of this war alive.
Severus was still uncertain about where the conclusion of this who conflict would leave him. On occasion he wondered about it, but most of the time he did not care. He had come to terms with death nearly two decades before, in fact he had little by way of self preservation left in him. Severus had not found much pleasure in his life over the past twenty years, misery had been more of a constant theme. Sighing lightly his obsidian eyes turned away from the white shadow in the dark. It was useless to dwell on ghosts of the dead, they would not give him answers to his questions nor would that moment of weakness do much for his sanity or his reputation. So lost in thought Severus had not noticed the sound of footsteps approaching him from behind until a nearby bird let out a strange call alerting the lanky figure to the approaching one. Severus shifted uncomfortably where he stood as he drew his wand quickly and demanded, "Identify yourself."

Rodolphus was weary as he approached the castle so late at night. Not that he was afraid, he never was, but rather he wasn't sure what was lurking in the dark around him. He couldn't see much, just as far as his wand illuminated in front of him. One would think it'd be sufficent, but it wasn't for Rodolphus. Also, he was growing rather tired of walking. He hated the grounds when he was in school for it too far too long to get from one side to the other. There was no easy way, no way to pop up in one place then pop off to another.
So he settled for the only choice he had. He changed into his animagi form. A dark feathered raven. It was the same form as his patronus, but it was more real. Much more real. He soared out over the grounds. It was now much easier to get around, and he could see things better too. He swooped over the grounds, looking for anything out of the ordinary. Anything that could entertain him at the very least.
It was then that he saw a figure at the lake. He dove and flew towards it, realizing as he got closer that it was Severus. He knew the man well, they had attended school together. They had been in the same house. They had been part of Voldemort's army, but for different reasons. He flew back over a tree that the man was near, and down towards the ground. He changed back into his human form, then turned and headed towards the lake once more. He crept along the side of the tree, snickering at Severus' words.
"Jumpy aren't we?" he questioned as he leaned against the tree. "Feelin' like a frog, are we?"

A familiar voice drifted from the edge of the forest and Severus found himself quickly gaining his composure. He scowled deeply at Rodolphus's mocking words, he hated appearing weak, especially in front of someone like Rodolphus. The night had been so still, yet now with the new found disturbance Severus found himself more on guard than ever. "You should be more careful about who you sneak up on, Lestrange." Severus responded, his words were full of agitation. He had more than his handful of enemies these days and he had reasons enough to be on his guard especially during the night when he was outside. "Consider yourself lucky that I did not use an unforgivvable on the spot." This snide remark did seem more of an empty threat then anything, in fact it probably fell flat before Severus's feet rather then do much to scare Rodolphus.
"Aren't you a little far from your patrol site?" Severus added silkily as an afterthought, there was some superiority in his voice that he did not bother to hide. He had not taken kindly to Rodolphus's taunting words. The Death Eaters had been known to patrol the grounds as the teachers of Hogwarts had once done to ensure that the ordered curfew was being carried out. Any students caught out of bed would be punished accordingly - ie: detention with the Carrows. The students had actually grown smarter when it came to breaking some rules such as curfew for fear of the consequences. Severus was not among those who were always out patrolling during the night, he had other things to do - better things to do. Most of the time the patrols were along the outskirts of Hogwart's grounds and around Hogsmeade village, but this curfew stretched as far to the streets of the Diagon Alley in London.
"I would assume that you would be patrolling closer to Hogsmeade village." Severus continued, "It's all clear here." He said pointedly waving a hand across the empty expanse of the grounds with the black lake in view. Severus's robes billowed slightly in the wind that was now picking up as the night wore on. He desired to be left alone really, but he knew that he would not have that luxery right now at least not while Rodolphus was around. He was skeptical and suddenly curious to find out why Rodolphus had strayed so far this way, that was if his assumptions about Rodolphus's post had been right. Severus did not exactly know each and every Death Eater's schedule, but during the daily meeting he tried to pay attention to which Death Eater would go where in terms of posting and responsibilities. Severus found this information vital to him, because he needed to know where they would be most vulnerable. Severus was not particularly fond of Rodolphus, but he did not have the intense hatred that he had for Bellatrix. They had attended school together and shared the same house so many decades before, but now Severus felt as if they had little in common - because Severus himself was no sociopath.
