Night was falling quickly as a dark drape over the isolated portion of London that was known as Knockturn Alley. This portion of London that branched directly off of Diagon Alley was not crowded as per usual. Few had the tenacity to venture down this Alley at night, it was the usual hideout of all the low-lifes that the wizarding world had to offer not to mention more than a handful of Death Eaters on any given night. Many were small time criminals or just those that had somehow lost their jobs and resorted to a more prosperous means of income with questionable legality of course. Severus did not come here that often, but tonight he had been on official business, actually it was more of personal business that he needed to settle. He had gone to the apothecary in order to obtain a few ingredients that were not so easy to come across near diagon alley or the black forest, said ingredients were easily considered illegal - although that never seemed to matter much anymore. Severus was still experimenting with different potions recipes and with his own spells, despite all the other work that he had to do he was always out to perfect his own personal work. His personal studies had always been something of an engaging hobby for him, it was a pleasant distraction from everything that was going on, a very welcome escape these days. Research had always been very enticing to him because he liked to explore different avenues of spells that he could possibly create. Pioneering new spells had always been exciting to him since it nothing short of a complicated science complete with years of practice that seemed mandatory to perfect any given hand movement or incantation.
Severus had left the apothecary armed with a small bag only moments before as he stepped out into the dimly lit streets. The darkness of the alley engulfed him and his thoughts drifted. All was quiet tonight, which was unusual considering it was a weekend night. Although the alley was normally pretty empty that did not keep it's occupants from generating all sorts of strange noises to spook those passing by. He was not expecting trouble of any sort considering the silence that wafted in the air, suspended like a stagnant stream laying tribute to a false sense of security. Severus knew better than to feel safe here. His current loyalties to the Dark Lord were known this world over, so maybe he did have a right to feel safe here - but he was not so stupid as to give into those false ideals.
His footsteps echoed off the slimey walls of the narrow alleyway as Severus progressed deeper into the heart of Knockturn Alley. He progressed forward languidly, window shopping as he went wondering in the back of his mind if he may have by chance forgot something that he needed to get before heading back to Hogwarts. The store fronts displayed a nasty amount of relics from over the ages, dark arts was the center of this small shopping complex and that was made clear by all the weathered advertisements hanging from the dingy stone walls. Shrunken heads and electric chairs adorned the windows made complete only with the addition of stacks of dusty books and a strange collection of flashing spinning objects. Black robes hung in the window of one shop tinged with golden thread making for the most elaborate window display yet. Severus passed over these objects, his obsidian eyes glaring into the gloomy windows covered in coats of dust and dirt from the elements of the outside world - yet he did not appear to be seeing anything that he was looking at. His thoughts had snagged him, pulling just under the glassy surface of his memories. He had come to Knockturn Alley a few times as a boy although he was not supposed to be here. Recalling those days Severus felt the corners of his mouth tinge upwards a bit, he had thoroughly enjoyed sneaking out to Knockturn Alley back than. This place had seemed like some hidden paradise suspended in the realm of these slimey stone walls. This was the epicenter of dark arts, an easy place to find anything that he might have been looking for.
Stepping down into the foyer entrance of yet another dark arts shop, Severus heard a voice speaking rather loudly just around the next blind corner. He paused in the middle of the narrow walkway to listen quietly to the words that he could just barely make out. These tall narrow walkways provided a good pathway for sound to travel, yet the words were never really distinguishable. Severus arched a brow as he slowly recognized the voice of Bellatrix Lestrange, he clenched his teeth considerably hard as he strained his own ears to make out her words or who she was talking to. From what he could hear it sounded as if she had run into someone. He had not planned on running into her of course, normally he attempted to avoid her yet that was always a tall order considering that she was working so closely with the Dark Lord as well. Severus turned on his heel ready to walk away.

if your blood is to be on. my hands it better be pure. There was hardly anything that Bella could complain about opening when it came to the way her life had improved since the Dark Lord had taken control of the wizarding world. She'd gotten to reap the benefits of all the hard work they had done. Though, deep down she knew she'd really taken pleasure in the violence and the death that was required to achieve their ends. While she loved the fact that Grimmauld Place was back in the Black family as her and Rodolphus' home, that she had endless amounts of money for all the fashions and jewels she wanted. It was difficult for some to imagine her as the Death Eater with unkempt hair and blackened teeth. They didn't know the girl she used to be before Azkaban. The one who wanted for nothing, and made a point to gain popularity through fear. Well, some things hadn't changed, at least. She used to follow fashions and present herself in a 'proper' manner befitting a wealthy pureblood.
The wizarding prison had changed...Voldemort had changed her. But now that they had managed to get rid of Dumbledore and Potter, and the Dark Lord ran the previously pathetic world they occupied there had be no one left to fight. She could go back to being that spoiled rich girl who had power for no other reason than being born in a particular family. And when it came to family pride, there was hardly anyone prouder than to call herself a Black. Well, she supposed technically she was a Lestrange now, but that hardly changed anything for her. Her side of the family came with its own ups and downs. But she had done her best to see that those 'mistakes' had been eradicated. After all, it was her blow that had ended her very own blood traitor cousin. What a fool.
Knockturn Ally was much busier since the Dark Lord stepped out into the limelight. Perhaps people felt safer to show their support for the Dark Arts. But it was not particularly booming as she walked down the ally. Even her body language had a touch of superiority that she had regained over the last few years. She felt a bit like the Queen of the wizarding world. Bellatrix was perhaps Voldemort's favorite follower, and she was certainly the most loyal. Her rewards had been many, and no one seemed to forget how close she was to him. The Death Eater had his ear closer than anyone else, and even one nasty look at her could potentially bring down consequences. Or else, she'd be let off her leash to take care of the situation herself.
Now that there was no need to use killing as the main way to instill fear in the population, she was able to stretch her legs much less often. The unfortunate side affect of this was that she was often in a sour mood. Even the attractive dress and her hair and make up couldn't hide the fact that she had a look on her face that would make a young child cry. Hell, it might make an adult cry. The only reason she was dressed up was because she was meant to meet her husband, @rodolphus at a publicized social event celebrating the success of the Ministry for five years. Well, the Battle of Hogwarts was technically five years and several months ago - but who was really counting? It was just an excuse to spend a lot of money and fill up newspapers with fluff pieces.
Bellatrix had a parcel in her hand - a small token for the Dark Lord on such an occasion. It was a customized item that she hoped he could consider useful, too. After all, even the leader of the wizarding world needed an extra cursed object in their back pocket. The fact that it was an item with ties to Salazar Slytherin was just icing on the cake. She knew how much the school meant to him. Especially now that he had control over it. Teaching the next generation the proper way of things was important to all of them. But no one more than Voldemort. Still, she hated all the dang brats.
"Get out of my way you bloody worthless wizard!" she yelled in the direction of a young man, probably in his 20s, who was dead drunk and pointing his wand at a pretty blonde girl. Bella could really care less what was going on between them, but really did he need to manage his business in the middle of the street. "Bloody drunken mess," she spat towards him. The young group looked over at the older witch with a mixture of fear and a rebellious spirit.
She stepped over what she could only assume was puke from drinking too much way too early...kids, really...and began to make her way out towards Diagon Ally. But she couldn't help but notice there was someone standing right in her line of sight. When she saw Snape she could hardly help but roll her eyes. It looked as if he'd turned away in an attempt to not be noticed by her. "Well now Severus. What could have possibly enticed you to leave Hogwarts? I trust all the little tots are safe in your absence?" she asked him. She enjoyed having some level of superiority over him. Although he was the Headmaster, he had to make sure she couldn't take anything negative back to the Ministry. Since she was teaching part-time at the school, there were plenty of opportunities for Bella to ruin him - and she would in a heartbeat if she could.
Still, even she had to admit that he hadn't committed any obvious action of betrayal since taking on the role of Headmaster. But she was looking - and she'd never not look at him with a suspicious eye. It was somehow part of her nature now. 0989! severus! knockturn ally! wearing! @severus

The way Snape's name rolled off her tongue could have sent chills down anyone's spine, but Severus Snape was not just anyone. He could feel the ice water running through his veins and coursing towards his better judgement about the expunge all traces of that defense mechanism. Her taunting words were no match for his new found patience though unfortunately. Severus had had decades of experience dealing with unsavory company and he knew just how to handle it. He had never been the patient type, but when he most needed it he was able to scrap up just enough of it to keep words down that were best left unsaid. "I have come on business if you must know." Severus said bluntly. "If you have faith in the Carrows than you won't have anything to worry about." He added pointedly. It was typical of Bellatrix to question him in anyway that she possibly could. Severus knew that she still had her lingering suspicions, but nothing would ever come of it. He was not about to let her catch him in the middle of any mess that would implicate anything other than his loyalty to the Dark Lord. It was clear that Severus was holding his temper, which was wavering and wiggling just below the dark surface of his thoughts. The pool of memories that was swirling and ever-present, which he kept under lock and key in the midst of all his thoughts.
Severus had to be cautious about what he said and what he thought, but his snide manner was something that many were accustomed to. He was good at shifting suspicions away from himself, but in the case of Bellatrix that was not so. Her suspicions had dated back to as far as he could remember. Ever since his escape from all Death Eater related charges decades before he had known that she was suspicious of him. His story was rather twisted, but all of the potholes were accounted for regardless of whether or not Bellatrix was willing to believe him. Severus easily had an answer for everything. His cautious manner was definitely paying off, but sometimes it was hard not to be reckless. At the moment he wanted nothing more than to hex her face off, but that was very counterproductive. Instead he stood there and decided to make civil conversation with one of the people that he hated most in this world.
Severus scrutinized her through obsidian eyes, "And what brings you out on this fine evening, Bellatrix?" It was not suspicious for her to be here, let alone for Severus to be here since this alley was known for it's dark artifacts. "Don't you have paperwork to do?" His voice was snide at the sound of her superior tone. Severus never liked anyone trying to tell him what to do with the exception of a few people, the Dark Lord of course was one of them. Dumbledore had been on that short list, but his position had unfortunately not been permanent. At the hint of any condescending tone he always felt as if he were being treated like a moron, someone with lowly intelligence. Above all else Severus hated it when people underestimated him and his intelligence. He spent seven years at Hogwarts being treated as such by his peers on more than one occasion. Severus silently focused on his breathing to control the anger that was not so evident in his mannerisms, but was definitely crushing his very insides. It was difficult to control his temper, practice or no, there was always certain people that knew exactly which buttons to push. Bellatrix happened to be one of them. Despite this Severus knew he could not let her interfere with his plans. At some point he knew he would have to swallow his pride.
