But if this is a plot, if it's a trick, if you've got an accomplice waiting up there to ambush us, we'll see if we can spare a bit of your daughter for you to bury." — Selwyn to Xenophilius Lovegood © Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows NARCISSISTIC, INSECURE, CALCULATING, MANIPULATIVE, ROUGH, ALCOHOLIC To say the least, Delaware Selwyn can be a very cruel man. Blood purity has made him narcissistic. As a young child he was boastful and unfairly judgemental of muggleborns and half-bloods. Throughout his adult life, Selwyn continued to use them as a scapegoat (as do most prejudiced wizards) and project onto them his own insecurities and fallacies, although he is not aware that he does so. Often, Selwyn is quiet, and this is because he is usually calculating and assessing. To those who do not fear Selwyn as a Death Eater, he is rather charming. Selwyn learned quickly that it is not very hard to get people to do what you want them to do, if not with brute strength with allure. Here and there he may crack a joke, he has a crude sense of humor, and sexual occasionally. The love and appreciation that Selwyn did not receive from his parents is apparent in his inability to hold onto someone for longer than a night. Selwyn thinks very lowly of his family, but rather highly of his distant Black relatives. Being unable to emotionally connect extends to his nonexistent relationship with his younger sister whom he is incredibly jealous of and he has not spoken to her in quite some time. Not surprisingly he is driven by denied hope that one day his own family would be proud of him. Selwyn has a very addictive personality. He enjoys drinking, very, very much. It is almost comical how much he finds drinking entertaining, and to the enjoyment of other it makes him entertaining to watch as well. Over the many years of drinking heavily he has become dependent on it. Alcohol provides Selwyn, simply, the ability to feel nothing at all. He does not feel his body, therefore he has pleasurable disconnection with his mind. At this point in his life, it is when Selwyn does not drink that he becomes much less pleasant. When Selwyn does not drink it has many benefits for him; he can think more clearly and duel more precisely, with the tradeoff being that he is very, very irritable. Delaware follows the path of Regulus Black with admiration, the former Death Eater who after finding out the weaknesses of the Dark Lord sought to destroy the horcruxes so that when they finally met, he would once again be mortal. Selwyn believes that the Dark Lord's impure blood is disgraceful, albeit he respects his lord and believes him to be powerful he often wonders what was in store for his followers. Of the promises he made to his faithful subject, what had honest merit? Selwyn believes the Dark Lord is incredibly foolish; he maintains allegiance with the DE for security, raids home for blood-traitors, and eliminates enemies of the Lord because Selwyn desires a relationship with the Dark Lord that is opportunistic. It would be unwise to step in the way of Selwyn's work, he does his job and he does it well. He has never hurt others for the simple enjoyment of it, although will he deem such act necessary when an individual is bothersome, or a threat to him. And while some are unsure of Selwyns allegiance, most are fooled by his neuroticism and work ethic. He is constantly fearful of who he cannot trust. He is almost entirely detached, but he is unsure of how long will he follow under the watchful eye of his Lord. WAND SPRUCE “Unskilled wandmakers call spruce a difficult wood, but in doing so they reveal their own ineptitude. It is quite true that it requires particular deftness to work with spruce, which produces wands that are ill-matched with cautious or nervous natures, and become positively dangerous in fumbling fingers. The spruce wand requires a firm hand, because it often appears to have its own ideas about what magic it ought to be called upon to produce. However, when a spruce wand meets its match - which, in my experience, is a bold spell-caster with a good sense of humour - it becomes a superb helper, intensely loyal to their owners and capable of producing particularly flamboyant and dramatic effects.” - Ollivander (Wand Maker) © Pottermore DRAGON HEARTSTRING “As a rule, dragon heartstrings produce wands with the most power, and which are capable of the most flamboyant spells. Dragon wands tend to learn more quickly than other types. While they can change allegiance if won from their original master, they always bond strongly with the current owner. The dragon wand tends to be easiest to turn to the Dark Arts, though it will not incline that way of its own accord. It is also the most prone of the three cores to accidents, being somewhat temperamental.” - Ollivander (Wand Maker) © Pottermore As a young child, Delaware was intrigued by wandlore. His fascination and knowledge of the Elder wand was noticed by both his parents and even the Dark Lord during the Battle of Hogwarts. When he received his wand, perhaps it was his parents expectation that their son would be given cypress, or ebony that first confirmed his parents ignorance, for both believed in their presumed supreme control of magic and the importance of a wand's image. However, despite his parents expectations for their son to carry a more regal wand which appearance matched its supposed power, Selwyn would settle with a wand made of wood which character matched his. Almost a foot in length, Selwyn's wand is solid. It is light in color and the yellow wood's engravings run deep in hand fashioned with beautiful, but almost entirely illegible ancient runes. The handle appears roughly chipped at a glance, but instead was carefully smoothed by the wand maker and is easy to hold. So, it was not a surprise to Selwyn that the Dark Lord would chose to carry his wand, as Lucius' was rendered incapable. "Your wand, Selwyn! Give me your wand!" —Lord Voldemort to Selwyn, during the Battle of the Seven Potters © Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows HISTORY Delaware Selwyn is the eldest child of Andromeda and Karthus Selwyn. Selwyn comes from an old pureblood family, and being of high blood status, Selwyn's parents held very high expectations for their son. Simply, they raised Selwyn with regality and a high standard of living and behavior. Delaware grew up with the firm belief that those with impure blood were beneath him. The Selwyn family was not against the rise of the Dark Lord, instead they viewed his domination of the wizarding world as proof that their blood status was in fact, important, and followed him with comfort. Selwyn traveled to many places in his youth before school, but for the most part they stayed outside of London where the family owned an immaculate estate, but rather small by standards. On the estate Selwyn would spend many hours outside reading, as he hated to be inside with his parents. The estate sat on a large plot of well kept land, many years before Maple trees were planted along the border. Selwyn has very vivid memories of the trees, and his home becoming enveloped in orange and red fire of changing leaves. Brisk winds would rip the leaves from where they rested, and heaps would land on top of the bay window sills. As a young child, Selwyn would often curse and holler at Teeks, the family house elf for many unimportant things. Selwyn would become angered when he would catch the elf charming the leaves away; although, Selwyn was unaware that it was because the small elf would have to clean them up later without magic. Selwyn's sister Reina was born several years after he, a beauty much like her mother, well liked by their parents and he appropriately terrorized her growing up. As Reina seemingly superseded her brother in later years, Selwyn became increasingly spiteful of her. When Selwyn turned eleven in 1975 he packed up his things, got his supplies from Malkim's, a wand at Ollivander's, a sweet barn owl from Eeylop's which he named Tyrannus and mentally and physically headed full speed to Hogwarts. Selwyn was unsurprisingly sorted into Slytherin, as he was driven and competitive. Comfort was found in knowing that there he could work hard to gain recognition that he deserved. Delaware had never in his life been around so many witches and wizards who had impure blood. In his childhood he was told to be proud, being pureblood was his foundation and so he was. He surrounded himself with wizards whose family reputation preceded others. He has since been close friends with Travers (Note: I am only assuming this, seeing how he worked with Travers just before the Battle of Hogwarts. I am open for plotting). Selwyn viewed it logically, those who are impure would not help him, they proved to do nothing for him so he simply looked past them. As a young child, Selwyn was interested in history and the art of charm. Throughout his life, being intelligent was something Selwyn found attractive. However, ironically into his adult life many intelligent witches and wizards he has met, he found to be a threat. In school, he became increasingly adept and knowledgeable in many things regarding the history of the wizarding world, wandlore and how to cast beautiful magic as most of his focus was on passing others and proving his worth. Later in his schooling, Selwyn realized that his parents irked him. Although he was never ignored, everything which came out of their mouths was exceptionally subpar and ignorant. Everything they did or said to their son was not out of love or support, or the goodness of their hearts, but for their own images within the wizarding community. His success was their success. He worked hard for many years at his schooling, and averaged high marks. He got along well with those he chose to talk to, he charmed most he met, and although he may not have been liked by everyone he grew up with the sense that he could make anyone do what he wanted them to do, if he said the right things. Selwyn realized there was a fine line between attraction and power. Not much later things began to slip, when Selwyn was sixteen he began to slow down as he realized he was about to hit the wall at the end of the line. Selwyn had no vision. Delaware filled out his face, grew a thin but roughish beard; moreover, his eyes began to sink in from lack of sleep. For most of his life, Selwyn was very aware of the rise of Lord Voldemort, he was an icon in the pure blood wizarding community. He watched him closely, like others, and when his life started to lose direction, he decided to do what many young wizards saw as the way out. Selwyn was eighteen when Voldemort mysteriously vanished, for the last two years of his schooling he had watched as he rose, and joined him as a Death Eater. His scar that slithered and moved as the Dark Lord had suddenly stood still. That was a time of confusion, and for many who were skeptical or hesitant of his intentions, his fall was rectifying. At the same time, for many, it was terrifying. But as the years past, those individuals figured it was not worth their time to search. Selwyn knew though too, when he may return many who claimed to have never stopped searching, those who claimed to never stop believing would lie, like he would, who didn't want to get marked as a traitor of the Lord. Selwyn worked several jobs, and made it by, never really making enough money as he would have liked but refused to speak to his family. He became dependent on alcohol and a pack to make it through the day. For Selwyn, the Dark Lord returning was an awful surprise, but a wonderful opportunity -- Selwyn became apart of a group of Death Eaters who are beginning to rebel against the Dark Lord. No matter what he was doing, there was a bigger purpose behind it. It became necessary for Selwyn to become engrossed in his job. Selwyn raids wizarding homes looking for blood traitors and suspicious activity for the Lord, and comes to his aid at every step. His aggressive drive would work to his advantage. If he plays his cards right, no one will question him, hopefully. ERIKA - EIGHTEEN - MOUNTAIN - FEMALE |
