She had blinked, she had rubbed her eyes, she had even pinched herself – but the newest 'educational decree' had stayed quite rooted in place, hanging there on the wall for all to see. And what a ludicrous one it was!! Alright, she could understand their fear of people assembling to overthrow them, that was why they had forbidden Hogsmeade trips for those they did not trust or clubs they had not approved. She had even thought after Decree 3 it could not get any worse: Getting the Dementors Kiss for hiding muggleborns?! That surely must be the lowest low, but then Decree 4 had come along: Students found in possession of muggle items will be subjected to a tribunal and imprisonment.
Seriously??!! Muggle items... what did that even entail?! It could be 80-90% percent of every day items that didn't run with magic. A comb, lipstick, hell, even clothing! Had a witch or wizard invented a sweater?! Had they invented socks?! Could they be 100% sure that the plates they ate from, the forks and knifes they used had been forged by magic and not simple handiwork?! Simple answer: No, they couldn't! „Which makes this absolutely ludicrous!“ she muttered under her breath, clenching and unclenching her fists as she was torn between laughing and crying with rage. Had Hogwarts become a complete madhouse?! The mixture of emotions in turmoil was starting to simmer dangerously inside her. Fanny knew herself well enough to know that if she didn't find an outlet soon, she would do something stupid.
Whatever was building up inside her, it needed out. But she could not simply call her sentiments all over the school grounds. That might be as quick a suicide as any around here! Her eyes desperately scanned the small crowd of passing students, until one familiar brunette stood apart. Baylee! Following her impulse. Fanny hastened over to her friend, slipping her hand under the girl's elbow and tried to steer her away from the path she had just wanted to take. „This is an emergency call“, she whispered under her breath. „Go out to the grounds with me, to some silent corner where hopefully no one can hear us or see us speak a Muffliato. I need to rant and vent off to someone or I'm gonna burst into flames right here and now. Please, Lee... you'd be my lifesaver!“
It might not be right to ambush her calm and often enough timid friend with such a plea, but she aso hoped that the sudden shock of her appearance would be enough for Baylee not even being able to say no.

The chatter of school children could be heard, ranging from ages of 11 to 18. Little girlish screams of joy came from a group of girls in a corner, large smiles on their faces. Perhaps a boy noticed them? She couldn't keep up with the hormonal changes anymore. A small smile raised to Baylee's lips, her back leaning on the cold cement wall of the castle. She liked to observe thing around her. Just because she was a nervous wreck and extremely shy didn't mean she couldn't be amazed at the ability of others. When it came to academics and things like that, Baylee could master, but social skills? They seemed to get lost along the way.
Baylee pushed herself of the wall and began to walk.
Recently, she had heard a new decree has been placed on "the wall". She hadn't caught the jist of it, nor did she have time to take a look. All she knew, was there were select happiness, and much devastation throughout the castle. Baylee had seen the castle change over the years she had been here. It was getting worse, and Baylee prayed for the younger years. She was lucky this was her last year.
She walked past multiple groups of students, many of them discussing the reasoning behind the new decree. Some children were ecstatic over the recent change. She could her delighted speeches about how this would benefit the new wizardry world and how the Dark Lord was finally putting things right. At this comment, Baylee snarled. The 'right' they were talking about was the key element in her mothers disappearance.
Others around her signed at the decree, some even shedding a few tears. She wondered what it could possibly be. After decree number 3, Baylee couldn't be any more surprised. She didn't even know if she had the guts to read it, let alone the heart to absorb it.
The decree came closer and closer, however, it was still too far away to read. She was quite interested, however, the interest was soon broken by a fiery red head grabbing her arm, steering her in a new direction and begging her to b a life saver. Everything was a blur, but when it came to focus, and Baylee noticed it was only Fanny, she calmed down and a small smile appeared on her face.
She grabbed Fanny's arm in return an continued in the direction of the grounds. "No problem" She whispered. She couldn't deny a friend the need to rant, especially when it appeared she would burst into flames at any moment.
Baylee made her way to the grounds, and looking around, spotted a secluded bench without the nosiness of other students. She pointed and made her way over, her hand on her wand, whispering 'Muffliato'
"Now, what has happened? Is it the new decree? I haven't had a chance to catch it yet..." Baylee announced, her eyes landing curiously on her Gryffindor friend.

Thank whatever God there was for Baylee Linton! This girl just had a knack of being at the right place at the very right time, without even trying much. On the contrary, she seemed to try and become completely invisible most of the time. There were not many people around or at least not many Fanny had ever met who were as socially awkward and completely unsure of their own self as Baylee. Though that, she often thought, was completely undeserved. The girl had a heart of gold, she only needed to learn to let it shine! This heart of gold showed itself right now again, when Lee didn't hesitate in following Fanny outside. Apparently she had not even read the decree yet or had been about to. Well, Fanny would give her a good account on it and no mistake!!
It was almost too much to force herself to sit down on the bench Lee had chosen. She'd rather have been pacing like a tiger, but instead she settled on using her hands as means of communication, brandishing them about in wide arcs to underline the words that kept shooting out of her mouth like a stream of bullets. „Oh you have NO idea, they really went over the top this time! Do you know what they forbid now? Muggle ITEMS! Now take a short breather and think about what that could mean.“ She didn't leave her friend that breather, however, too agitated to keep silent for too long. Instead, she continued right after, as if her friend had indeed said something. It wasn't meant to come across as dominating or abrasive, there was just no stopping her once she was enranged.
„Eeexactly! It means they have NO idea what they're doing anymore. Can you tell me what is NOT a so called muggle item? Apart from a wand and potions elixirs? We didn't invent pumpkin juice did we? Do butchers cut their venison with a wand? No they use knives! Who invented a knife? A wizard? Don't make me laugh! If they mean technology, why those don't even function here, so what's the point in HAVING them here! I don't think anyone has... do you?“
Now finally, Fanny took a much needed breath and forced herself to calm down at least a little. She raked a hand through her long fiery red hair and suddenly gave a laugh. „Oh right, I should get used to that. As far as I know combs and brushes were also not invented by wizards. Merlin's beard, we'll soon walk around like wood gnomes... oh wait, that's it! They want us all to look like Bellatrix Lestrange...“

It was quite a nice day outside. The sun was shining, and the grass was quite green. In all honesty, it was contradicting to the mood that had overcome the halls of Hogwarts. As Baylee waited for Fanny to take a seat, even though it seemed she would love to pace a lot more to walk the utter frustration out, she allowed a small smile come to her lips. Although Baylee was shy and socially awkward, she knew that there were two people in her life she could count on in her years at Hogwarts, and that was Fanny and Sig. Really, Fanny brought the best out in Baylee.
Fanny began her rant, but the more words that exited Fanny's lips, the more downhearted Baylee became. Banishing muggle items? But that was simply, stupid. Baylee couldn't put it any other way. It didn't make sense, it was an abomination. Baylee felt a flame alight in herself, and she herself wanted to become hysterical, and simply, take over the pacing and grunting. Were they serious? Muggle items? Banned? That was laughable. What? Were they going to walk around naked? Did they think that was acceptable?
Before Baylee could even muster a response, Fanny began again, and good thing she did, or else she may see the never before seen hysterical side of Baylee Linton.
She watched every move that Fanny made, intrigued almost. She now understood the uproar of some students. In reality, all students should feel upset. She couldn't imagine that not even the Dark Lord used some form of muggle item.
Baylee snickered at Fanny's comment regarding Bellatrix Lestrange. She took a deep breath, trying to sort out her thought process.
She opened her mouth, as if she wanted to speak, but the right words just weren't coming out.
Finally, Baylee could speak. "Now this is just getting ridiculous..." Baylee began, her calm voice clearing the short silence. But it wasn't long before even Baylee's small rant started. "How can people be so stupid? So idiotic. Have they got barnacles for brains? Or the bran power of a newt? This is simply unheard of. Can we not even take a shower? Oh your right, they want us all to look, and smell, like Bellatrix Lestrange..." Baylee snickered.
She got off the bench and began her pacing, throwing her arms up in the air. "Do they really believe that this will work?" Baylee asked, turning to look at her friend. This was one of those rare times you would ever see Baylee in such animation, with such emotion. She let out a large grunt and fell to the ground, as if she were having a 5 year old tantrum.
How ridiculous. Seriously.

It seemed that her rant had rendered Baylee speechless. Something like that Fanny had almost expected, since she knew her friend was (gladly sometimes!) no match for her in spunk. Baylee was not one to blurt out things without thinking first (and that was why she rarely got in trouble for it unlike Fanny), but once in a blue moon there were moments when even Baylee was in the mood to rant. That this time was now, the young Gryffindor hadn't really expected, she had been much more focused on finally getting those thoughts of her own chest – but then Lee started.
It began slowly, almost carefully and calm, but her statemend was far from over. More words followed and Baylee's voice rose in pitch and vehemence, until Fanny stopped in her tracks, her eyes that focused on her friend widened in sudden understanding and shock. And now, as she really was warming up for the topic, Fanny couldn't help the smile that tugged at her mouth. Barnacles for brains?! Now, if that wasn't a creative insult! She surely had never heard it before! When Lee ended with that last outraged question, Fanny just sat there for a moment and blinked. „Woah...“ she said, and inspected her friend as if she saw her for the very first time. "Didn't think you had that in ya... impressive!“
But as she didn't want to make fun of Baylee, she soon pulled herself together and gave a snort. „I daresay they didn't even think this through! They're going to enmesh themselves in their countless restrictions before they know it. This is why their stupid blood supremacy thing will never work: It's without any foundation. Muggles and wizards have existed side by side for eons and just because they don't need us doesn't mean we don't need them. We are the minority for heaven's sake! That's like human kind in general dedicing to rid the planet off all animals, cause we're the best species. But oh well...“
Again she raked a hand through her hair, a smirk suddenly grazing her features. „There'll be time enough when I can put my aggression towards them to good use. Will be excellent fuel for the duel... and wow, that rhymed“, she finished with a broad grin.

Baylee was still trying process the new decree, after all, it was simply absurd. It was as if there as something blocking her thought process. It just wouldn't allow it, although it didn't take long for the present rant to finally dawn on the young Ravenclaw. Had she just used the insult 'barnacles for brains?'... Was that the best insult she could come up with? Baylee was an embarrassment in the art of rants as well!
Her cheeks slightly glowed a shade of red, and she was thankful her friend did not fuel the fire in the sense of her "rant" being less than... adequate... could she say...
"Thank you" She muttered, her eyes diverting to the ground. She couldn't help the feeling of embarrassment even with her friends. As Fanny said, it was impressive... And Bayle couldn't help but show a small smile. It didn't take long though for Fanny to begin her own thought process.
Baylee focused on the red head. She nodded in agreement with each word that had been said. Fanny was quite right in that sense.
"I agree. I mean, really, where would wizards be without the help of muggles?" She asked, not a question to Fanny but a question in general. If they were to rid the world of muggles, evolution entirely may come to a holt. Or at least, a million years in the past... But this reminded her of her mother. After all, most of the stuff Baylee owned, was a gift from her mother which was indeed muggle.
Baylee tuned to the last part of Fanny's comment, and she needed a second to process this. A duel? What? Fanny couldn't, wouldn't... Baylee wouldn't allow this. Really, Baylee was anti-duelling, as it wasn't a strong point. Sure, she was good with spells and such, but she didn't have the guts to actually duel.
Baylee stuttered few times will words finally escaped. "What do you mean? No. I won't allow this. Fanny, I mean, come on. No. Definitely not!" Baylee, stood, as if to signify her dominance, in which she had none, so really, it was a lost cause, but Baylee would try...
"Fanny, you know this is a lost cause. as much as we hate this, we cannot change it... I mean, I'll be honest, I would love nothing better than to stick it to those dirty, conniving, mother-snatching death eaters and snatchers..." Baylee emphasized, her words ending in venom, her eyes glazing over to signify she was in another place... She couldn't lose another...
Baylee shook her head. "As much as I know you don't need my help, what ever you are planning, or know of, it's not a good idea. Please Fanny, listen to reason..." Baylee announced. Baylee couldn't help but show the worry on her young face.
What was Fanny planning?

Baylee's question had been rhetorical, clearly, as there was absolutely no question as to where the wizards would be without the muggles, but she still thought this argument could use one more obvious statement. It just helped to spell it out, in a way. „We'd be extinct, clearly. Or completely lunatic. Do you know what muggle scientists say, that too much mixing of genes makes one dim-witted? I think the process has finally started to bear fruit in the Wizarding World.“ For one truly had to be without much brain capacity to follow such paroles of blood purity. And yet, all history was full of examples. Just that every time this had happened, a revolution had followed soon after. It was definitely time for another, before those Apartheid-Arian-Klu-Klux-Klan ideas really took root in the Wizarding World.
Noticing how Baylee looked to the ground, Fanny forgot the Hogwarts problems for a moment and rather focused on her friend. „Lee, if you start excusing yourself now for your expert little rant, we two will get into serious problems, okay?“ Her hand impulsively went to Lee's shoulder, giving it a little squeeze. „You have every right to speak your mind and it was brilliant what you said. Understood?! Trust in yourself a little more and in a better world than this, you'd win first places in debating clubs. Mom told me they had those in the old Hogwarts days.“
Now, however, it was Fanny's turn to blush. Dammit, she hadn't meant to blurt that out... she should have guessed Lee's reaction would be against her idea, but if she already flew off the handle like that, how would Haley react?! She probably would blow up the whole castle... glorious prospects! „Listen, I know this looks...“ she started, but this time there was no stopping Lee. Fanny's eyes widened again as she listened to her friend's sermon, suddenly feeling like a black sheep in front of its shepherd. There was so much hatred in her voice, and yet she would not allow Fanny the duel? Oh God, she's scared..., she realized, feeling even worse. Scared of what might happen to me... because of what happened to her mom.
„Lee...“ she began, groping for words. „I know you're having a hard time and that you fear them. I fear them too. But I also want them to see, they cannot walk all over us. That's why I signed up for the duel at this 'Gathering' we have to attend. I'm part of the duelling club, so no one will suspect something. It's not gonna be easy, but I want to test them and test myself.“ It sounded better in her head, she had to admit. „This is the closest I can get to try and take out Death Eaters without being killed for it on the spot.“ It might still happen, though... rumour already had it the pairings might be quite unequally chosen. There would be no mercy... and if she had a bad day... No, better not think of that!

Baylee smirked at Fanny's coment regarding dim witted wizards. It was already clearly showing that blood purity was becoming rare to the point, how many families were beginning to inbreed? Baylee shuttered at the thought. It was quite a horrible thought. Maybe Bellatrix Black was a result? She was insane after all, and not entirely all there...
Baylee couldn't help but smile at Fanny's encouraging words. It seemed Fanny had much more confidence in Baylee than Baylee had in herself, and it was good to surround herself with someone positive. She had no doubt that people would probably accept her, but Baylee didn't know the customs of getting to know people, and it was quite dd she had Fanny, Sig and Al. As strange as it was for Baylee to even mention Al...
She watched as Fanny then began to blush. It made Baylee realize that what Fanny had mentioned, had actually been a mistake, something Baylee wasn't supposed to know...
Baylee watched the many changes of emotions that ran through Fanny, but Baylee couldn't, nor she wouldn't lose a friend, especially Fanny. As Fanny explained her reasonings behind the decision, Baylee couldn't help but agree, but why did it have to be Fanny? Why couldn't some other student stand up to the Death Eaters?
"Look, Fanny. I'm not angry at you, I'm just... Scared" Baylee admitted, her head falling in shame. Of course Baylee knew that Fanny wold probably be okay, and if anything was to go wrong, Baylee knows she would step in to help...
"I just don't want anything to happen... You know they fight dirty... You know they will choose partners that will be unevenly matched. We are students, we aren't supposed to be able to defeat them. It's a sham, to put us back in our place.." Baylee explained, her eyes intent on the red head in front of her.
"Just promise me you'll be careful!" Baylee begged. There was no point in trying to make Fanny change her mind. That wasn't something Baylee could do, because she knew, if someone wanted something bad enough, they would stop at nothing to get it...

Fanny was relieved to see that the tempest of anger she had feared would occur had actually only been a tempest in the teapot. It would have been a great deal scarier if Baylee really had continued to throw a little fit. She seemed to accept the fact, did she not? That was Lee, surely... pragmatic and fatalistic if need be, and she loved her friend for it. In any way, the dice were cast. Fanny could not withdraw her name now, even had Lee or anyone else convinced her to do so. There was no use now in wasting any more energy on arguing.
However, even if she might not intend to, Lee still had a knack for causing a bad conscience. Seeing her friend so obviously scared for her safety made Fanny almost feel selfish and foolish on top of it. But she mustn't doubt herself! Only a self-esteem bursting at the seam would aid her in this mission. The moment she started second-guessing herself was the moment she would lose. „There is no shame in being scared“, she told her friend however, shaking her head. „We'd be fools not to. But it should be fear that makes us cautious and alert, not fear that paralyzes our mind and limbs. That's what they want... but we'll give them that other kind of fear!“
Checking herself, Fanny had to smile. Sometimes she realized she had in fact read too many rousing speeches of known revolutionaries. They had become part of her own vocabulary and now sometimes she couldn't help but give a little speech of her own, even though her only audience was her best friend. „That might be“, she admitted when Baylee suggested nothing but a sham. „But that doesn't mean I can't give them a good run for their money. Who knows, maybe they even think I'm on their side if I show no mercy and no fear. Think of what kind of insight that could give us.“
The thought had occurred to her just now, but it also was a scary one. Did she really want to delve closer into their kind of world? It would be even more than a dance on knife's edge than it was already! She shoved that thought away to deal with later. First things first... and she first and foremost HAD to make a good impression, had to stand her ground. „That I can promise you wholeheartedly“ she replied, trying to give her voice a soothing undertone. „I will not let my defense slack. I know they fight dirty and that I have to be prepared for anything. And I have the best fanbase, I believe“, she finished on a slightly more upbeat tone.

A cool breeze set through the court yard which made the young Ravenclaw pull her robes closer. To be honest, Fanny was the sister Baylee never got to hand, and Baylee didn't believe for a second that would ever change. Baylee felt a closeness to the Gryffindor. A closeness that allowed Baylee to be herself, like a sister. Baylee felt she had nothing to hide.
She looked towards her friend and smiled. Fanny knew what she was doing, and Baylee believed in her, she just didn't want to see Fanny get hurt. Baylee continued with Fanny's comment. "Without fear, we have nothing. We have nothing to believe in, nothing to look forward to.. I understand Fanny, I just... I just wish it didn't have to be you!" She exclaimed, a small smile rising to her lips. "But I guess this is where you shine.. And I want you to be happy, and feel fulfilled..." her voice was quiet, but proud.
Baylee disliked the fact she was so forgiving, the face she rolled over in the slightest debate...
Baylee's eyes widened as the next comment. Insight? What would Fanny even see? Would she liked what she saw. Had she even thought that part through? "Fanny. Tell me your not thinking of even, pretending... The things you would see. I couldn't even imagine, I couldn't even..." Baylee began, panic in her voice.
Her voice calmed when the promise was made. But this made her think. If Fanny had signed up... Would Sig have? She knew that was a strength of his... What if he did? What if he got hurt? what were her friends doing! She made a mental reminder to confront Sig about that later....
Baylee laughed. "Your fan base is huge!!!" Baylee explained, expanding her arms as emphasis. "But on that note... Have you informed your sister?" Baylee asked, knowing the answer. She gave Fanny a look, telling her she needs to, because if she didn't and her sister was present for the duel itself, she'd have a fit... And the deatheater would be the least of Fanny's problems... She gave a Fanny a smile, no matter what, Baylee would always be on Fanny's side.

Oh yes, she could understand her friend. She could understand them very well even. But things were as they were, there was no use in dwelling in the land of 'what might have been'. All they could do was react to things accordingly, and for Fanny that meant putting herself in the line of fire for some greater good. She was done with second row and side line, she wanted to shape the world with her very own hands, even if that process was dangerous. „It has to be someone“, she pointed out, a passionate gleaming entering her eyes. „And if we don't start, no one ever will. I'm not doing this for self-fulfilment – at least i hope I do not! - but because I believe it's the only way. Though of course... if you have a plan B that won't end up with me being hexed to pieces, I'm all ears.“
The second part of her plan however wasn't even nearly as well received and Fanny wished she hadn't said anything at all. Good Lord, if one was even crazy enough to consider such madness, one shouldn't parade it in front of your friends. Would she never learn?! „Shh, calm down!“ she tried to soothe her friend, shaking her head. „It was just a fleeting idea. Forget what I said. I also doubt it would even work. Merlin knows what I would have to do to get even some insight worth passing on, being a Gryff and all.“ Try as she may, however, the thought stayed rooted in her head. It was a thrilling one, one that made her adrenaline level simmer. Sneaking behind enemy lines, finding out what they knew and never would tell, things that could help the order... she definitely needed to sleep over that some more. In any way, she would need a watertight plan – or she might as well plan her own funeral.
A grin blossomed on Fanny's face as Baylee goofed around, describing her fanbase. It was all nonsense of course, but it was good to know her friends had her back. Unlike... other members of her inner circle. That same old sting in her guts reappeared when she thought of what Haley would say. Try as she may, sixteen years of putting her sister's opinion as the highest standard couldn't simply be erased. „Um... no...“ she muttered, looking to the side. „I'm, um, … saving that up for an opportune moment, you know.“ Perfect moment probably would be when hell froze over... or when the cows came home. Suddenly the ground next to her feet became very interesting. „I mean, what's the difference? She's gonna say no anyway, but I can't go back now. Might as well save her the breath of trying to convince me otherwise.“
